The Brighton Open Concept Basement Sanctuary: A Masterclass in Architectural Continuity

How do you escape vertical living in a Saskatoon two storey home?

Homeowners in newer Saskatoon neighborhoods may often feel the constraints of vertical living, where lots are narrower and many new homes are two storeys. Living spaces are stacked across smaller footprints, and bungalows are rare.

By designing an open concept basement development, we can help you reclaim the expansive, wide open feel that two storey layouts lack. By prioritizing a large, multi purpose retreat for fitness and entertainment over bedrooms, we can create a functional sanctuary that creates an escape and balances the home flow.

A Basement Retreat in the Heart of Brighton

We originally built this custom home in Brighton, and were thrilled when the owners returned to us to complete their lower level. They loved their community and their home, but they envisioned a dedicated space for fitness, movies, board games, and relaxation.

While we see many homes in newer Saskatoon neighborhoods like Brighton, Rosewood, Evergreen, Aspen Ridge, and Stonebridge that feel boxed in by two storey designs, we solve this through strategic planning and thoughtful design. As a leading basement contractor, we designed this layout to provide a bungalow scale experience. By strategically omitting walls, we created a sprawling sanctuary with an uninterrupted flow that is rarely found in traditional two-storey designs. This retreat perfectly complements the home, providing a spacious architectural contrast to the defined living areas on the upper floors.

Expert Consultation: Choosing Maximum Living Space

As an expert Designer and Project Manager, our role is to provide honest guidance that prioritizes your lifestyle over generic checklists. When we reviewed the initial vision for this basement finish, the clients initially asked if it would be odd to omit a basement bathroom despite the existing bathroom rough-ins.

We carefully analyzed the footprint and provided our professional opinion that a bathroom was unnecessary for their specific goals. Because the main floor powder room was centrally located right at the stairwell, and this was a dedicated recreation hub rather than a guest suite, we knew we could better utilize that square footage. This also allowed them to save on the added cost of a new bathroom.

By capping and filling the existing plumbing drain rough-ins, we reclaimed significant floor space. This allowed us to create an amazing open concept, with zones for games, a home fitness space, and a theater area that feels expansive and connected.

Professional Project Management and Fixed Pricing

Once we finalized the custom design plans and specifications for our clients, we provided them with a fixed price for the entire project. We believe this transparency is essential, as it ensures there are no budget surprises during construction and allows you to invest in your home with total confidence.

As the basement contractor, we managed the entire regulatory process to ensure every detail was compliant and safe. We secured all necessary Saskatoon city permits for building, plumbing, and electrical work, and our team coordinated every required inspection. By taking on the responsibility of project management, we allow you to focus on the excitement of your new space while we handle the technical and legal complexities.

Technical Precision and Seamless Integration

As expert designers and builders, we integrated high performance features for our clients that required a sophisticated design build touch. We believe that your basement finish should be as technologically advanced as it is beautiful, and we utilized this project to showcase how we execute complex technical requirements.
  • The Media Hub: We executed full wiring rough ins for our clients, including front and rear surround sound, a ceiling mounted projector, and electrical for a motorized home theater screen.

  • Smart Ambiance: We installed zoned LED potlights with Lutron Caseta dimmers to allow the homeowners to set the perfect mood for movie nights or high energy workouts.

  • High Reach Automation: We wired and installed an automated blind for a hard to reach upper stairwell window. This required professional drywall surgery and precision paint matching, which we handled seamlessly to ensure our clients received a flawless finish.

  • Architectural Continuity: Because we are experts in Saskatoon finishing standards, we matched the trim, doors, and paint perfectly to the upper floors. We ensure the final result feels like a natural extension of your home rather than an afterthought.

Efficient Execution and Outcome

Once the Saskatoon city permits were approved and we began framing, the project took approximately 8 weeks to complete. We believe that an efficient timeline is just as important as the quality of the build, as it allows our clients to enjoy their new space without unnecessary delays.

The result was a functional and comfortable sanctuary that perfectly matched the lifestyle and budget of our clients. By focusing on quality and open concept flow, we delivered a project that proves you do not need a larger house. You simply need a more crafted use of the space from a trusted basement contractor who understands how to bring your vision to life.

Project Insights

Is it possible to match a new basement finish to an older home's original design?
Yes. We specialize in Architectural Continuity, which means we do not just pick materials that are close enough. As your basement contractor, we do our best to identify the specific millwork profiles, door styles, hardware and paint sheens used in the rest of your Saskatoon home to ensure the new development feels like a natural extension of the original build rather than an afterthought.
What are the benefits of choosing an open concept layout for a basement development?
In newer neighborhoods like Brighton, Rosewood and The Meadows, where many homes are two storeys on narrower lots, an open concept layout helps break the feeling of vertical living. By strategically omitting unnecessary walls or extra bathrooms, we can create a bungalow scale retreat that offers the expansive, multi purpose space that is often missing from the upper floors.
Is a basement bathroom always necessary?
Not necessarily. In this project, we found that reclaiming that space for a fitness zone provided more value to the homeowner than an extra bathroom. As your Project Manager, we help you evaluate these benefits and trade-offs during our design phase to ensure your basement finish truly serves your lifestyle.
